Yoga with Megan
Megan's yoga style
I
have been practicing yoga for over fifteen years, with increasing
dedication and involvement, and teaching for ten of those years in
Uptown Waterloo. Throughout this time, I have learned four different
styles of yoga and weave them all into my teaching. These are Iyengar,
Ashtanga, Kripalu
and Sivananda,
the strongest influence being Iyengar. Yoga poses, or asanas, are the
same but each of the styles has its own focus and strength, and I aim
to bring the best of all four techniques together in my own personal
blend of hatha yoga and teaching style. As an old physical
education student, I have a particular interest in helping people learn
how to move from core body strength and proper alignment, developing
new habits of moving in the way our bodies are designed to move.
Teaching yoga
Teaching
yoga happened organically for me; in 2002 it was just the obvious next
step. For an old physical education student, it was bringing the
physical dimension into working with people. For someone who has
pursued a deeper path in life for many years, and worked a lot with
people in talk therapy, it was a practical way to help adults learn
deep relaxation and meditation, listen to their body wisdom, and
develop a greater balance between mind, body and spirit. For a child
and family therapist, it was a positive, holistic way to work with
children and youth.
In each yoga
class I like to include a good mixture of challenge, flexibility,
strength, inner body awareness and relaxation. As well, I pay attention
to the order and flow of a class, so the whole experience of the yoga
session leaves one integrated and rejuvenated. I have a
particular interest in helping people re-align their bodies back to
optimal alignment, learning how to move from strength and ease.
Having
spent many years in athletic pursuits, I have a particular interest in
working with athletes and athletic people, allowing them to experience
how yoga helps physical performance. However, this is by no means a
prerequisite for my classes. I tend to teach classes of medium level
intensity.
Meditation and relaxation
I
have a strong interest in deep relaxation and meditation, and seek to
help others learn to sit with their inner stillness and listen to their
true inner voice. I guide the last part of each yoga class into
relaxation and inner experience, moving through numerous relaxation and
meditation techniques as the weeks of a yoga session progress, allowing
people to find the methods that work for them.
I
also offer sessions specifically for teaching relaxation techniques to
children, adolescents and adults. Please contact Megan if you would
like a class or workshop in your home, school, workplace or community
centre.
